Gyula_portrait.jpg

Gyula Varosy makes sculpture out of tree trunks, old structural beams and fragile pieces of wood that have had many lives before. Large-scale bronze sculptures from his early career are sand cast. Many of his pieces incorporate cast bronze elements into the composition, while others have composite-cast components. Marble and slate are used on occasion as well as copper leafing.

The sculptor, his materials, patience and deliberation form a convincing partnership. Varosy’s architectural background underpins his sense of order and geometry, merging with mythical allusions and references. The works express deep emotions, from hardship and loss to perseverance and triumph.
